The Science. The Soil. The Story.

The scientist who actually lives what she writes

Dr. Sharon de Wet isn't your typical health author. She is a microbiologist with over 35 years of real laboratory science behind her — spanning food safety, clinical diagnostics, and veterinary research — with a PhD, patents, and peer-reviewed research to her name.

But what sets Sharon apart isn't just the credentials. It's that she grows her own vegetables on a Queensland acreage, ferments her own kimchi, brews her own kombucha, and bakes sourdough from her own starter. She doesn't just study gut health. She lives it.

"There is a massive gap between what science actually knows about the gut and what people are being told. I write to close that gap."

As the founder and Chief Scientific Officer of Semexion Pty Ltd, Sharon has spent her career coordinating research, securing patents, and advancing experimental methodologies. As an author and educator, she has spent it making that science accessible to everyone.

The Science

A career built on understanding what lives inside us

Sharon's scientific career has been anything but narrow. Starting in food microbiology — where the safety of what we eat is paramount — she moved into clinical and veterinary settings, building a uniquely broad picture of how microorganisms interact with living systems at every level.

Her research focus on pathogen detection, livestock health, and the gut microbiome gave her an early window into something most health communicators were still ignoring: that the trillions of organisms living in your gut are not background noise. They are central to almost everything about your health.

As CEO and CSO of Semexion Pty Ltd, she has led research teams, coordinated international studies, and secured patents — bringing rigorous methodology to every question she investigates.

The Gap

Why she started writing books

After decades in research, Sharon kept bumping into the same problem. The science on gut health was advancing rapidly — but almost none of it was reaching ordinary people in a usable form.

What was reaching people was worse: oversimplified advice, unqualified influencers, contradictory headlines, and products making claims the science didn't support. People were confused, overwhelmed, and making decisions without real information.

So she started writing. Not to simplify the science until it was meaningless — but to translate it faithfully, in plain English, for people who deserved the real answer.

Science in the lab.
Science on the acreage.

Sharon lives on a small acreage in Queensland where she grows much of her own food — fruit, vegetables, herbs — and puts her microbiological knowledge to work every single day.

Her kitchen is as much a laboratory as her actual lab has ever been: a place for experimenting, observing, adjusting, and enjoying the results.

Why it matters

Bridging the gap between
cutting-edge science and your kitchen

Every book Sharon writes has the same goal: to hand you the science without the jargon, so you can make genuinely informed decisions about your health — not decisions based on trends, fear, or misinformation.

Her gut health series — Gut Health Essentials, the Gut Health Food Diary, and the Essential Gut Health Cookbook — represents years of distilling complex microbiome research into practical, daily tools that actually work in real life.

Because you deserve science that works in your kitchen, not just in a lab.
